Meet the Principal

Taren Turner

Greetings West Families,

Welcome to our school website! We want to thank you for your commitment and partnership with us!

At West Middle School, we are a prideful, supportive and collaborative community with high expectations. Our goal is for your child to have a sense of belonging in school and receive a quality learning experience that prepares them for lifelong success.

The 2022-2023 school year will be my 9th year in administration. I am excited to embark on my 1st year as a middle school Principal. Prior to coming to West, I was the Assistant Principal at Ellis Elementary School from 2014-2016 and the Principal from 2016-2022. Before becoming a teacher, I studied political science, law and philosophy. While I did not grow up knowing I’d become a teacher and ultimately a principal, I always loved school and thrived in the realm of education. Therefore I wanted those I came into contact with to have a similar experience. What is greater than the liberation and power of knowledge? I consider myself a lifelong learner and I am a current doctoral student at Northern Illinois University working towards an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. As one who has always been an advocate for all and a believer in equity and justice, one day I would like to work as an Assistant Superintendent or a Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer.

I have two sons ages 8 and 13 and they both attend Rockford Public Schools. My free time is limited, but I try to make time to be physically active on a regular basis. I also enjoy traveling (New York City is my favorite vacation spot), reading and spending time with family. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to call me at West at 815-966-3200.
